Guide for International Outpatients
Welcome to Juntendo University Hospital.
Juntendo University Hospital opened in 1838 and was the first medical school in Japan to adopt Western medicine. Since that time, we have striven to provide compassionate, safe, and advanced medical care to all patients as our highest priority. We welcome international patients (foreign nationals without Japanese public health insurance).
This section introduces our Reservation Clinic and Second Opinion Service to international patients who are coming to our hospital for the first time. Appointments to see experienced specialists can be made in advance, specifying the day and time of the visit, and ensuring adequate communication through appropriate medical interpretation. International patients can thus feel a sense of security during their medical examination.
Applications are made through a medical coordination service. For more detailed information, please refer to the pages entitled “Reservation Clinic for International Outpatients” and “Second Opinion Service for International Outpatients”.
If you are in Japan for a short stay and require urgent medical treatment, please contact the Department of International Healthcare for a consultation.
This service applies to English-speaking patients only; other languages may be added in the future as resources become available. When you come to the hospital, please bring your passport, and as much medical information as you can from your home country or from local clinics of Japan, such as medical summaries or test results. We accept medical documents in English. For other languages, please translate them into Japanese or English. Please note that if we are unable to treat you in the General Medicine Clinic, nor able to provide an English source for specialty care, you may be asked to seek treatment at another medical institution or provide your own Japanese-English interpreter.
Starting on April 1, 2018, international patients who do not have Japanese public health insurance are charged at a rate of 30 yen per medical remuneration point (versus 10 yen per medical remuneration point for those with Japanese public health insurance). Juntendo University Hospital has been designated a “Special Functioning Hospital” by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, providing high-level, advanced medical care. To provide safer and more reliable services, we ask that you bring a patient referral document (letter of referral) from the medical institution where you were previously seen when you come for your consultation. Patients with a letter of referral from a hospital in another country are asked to prepare a Japanese or English translation. If you do not have a patient referral document, you will be charged an additional initial consultation fee of 11,000 yen (tax included).
Smoking is prohibited anywhere on hospital property as well as in surrounding areas. Eating and drinking are prohibited in outpatient areas. Photos and video are prohibited anywhere on hospital property. You are also asked to set your mobile phone to silent mode and to refrain from talking on the phone except in designated phone areas. Patients who require special accommodations for religious reasons are asked to inquire directly to the Department of International Healthcare.
