International patients (foreign nationals without Japanese public health insurance) visiting Juntendo University Hospital for the first time are welcome to be seen at our Reservation Clinic (or Second Opinion Service). This clinic is offered by appointment only in order to ensure safe, advanced medical care while allowing for sufficient time for examination.

If you are in Japan for a short stay and require urgent medical treatment, please contact the Department of International Healthcare for a consultation. Our General Medicine Clinic, as well as select outpatient specialty clinics offer services in English primarily for acute care evaluation and treatment for tourists and business people traveling or working in Japan. (We ask that patients seeking treatment for pre-existing and chronic conditions to make appointments through a medical coordination service.) The General Medicine Clinic accepts patients during clinic business hours from 8:30am to 3pm, Monday through Friday.

This service applies to English-speaking patients only; other languages may be added in the future as resources become available. When you come to the hospital, please bring your passport, and as much medical information as you can from your home country or from local clinics of Japan, such as medical summaries or test results. We accept medical documents in English. For other languages, please translate them into Japanese or English. Please note that if we are unable to treat you in the General Medicine Clinic, nor able to provide an English source for specialty care, you may be asked to seek treatment at another medical institute or provide your own Japanese-English interpreter.

Reception hours may differ depending on the hospital department.

Note: *Outpatient examinations on Saturday afternoons (excluding the second Saturday of each month) are offered by select departments only. Please check the website page of the department you plan to visit. Necessary documents and interpreter arrangements

  • Letter of referral
Juntendo University Hospital is a “Special Functioning Hospital” certified by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, which provides high-level, advanced medical care. To provide safer and more reliable medical care, we ask that you bring a patient referral document (letter of referral) from the medical institution where you were previously seen when you come for your consultation. Patients with a letter of referral from a hospital in another country are asked to prepare a Japanese or English translation. If you do not have a referral letter, you will be charged an additional initial fee of 11,000 yen (tax included).

  • Medical certificate and test results from your country (copy of original and Japanese translation)

Note: People who already have a letter of referral from a hospital or clinic in Japan do not need a medical certificate or test results from their home country.

  • Patient’s passport (required)

  • If you have digital images, please bring a CD-ROM (DICOM format).

Patients who do not speak Japanese should always come to the hospital together with a medical interpreter. Please note that people who do not come with a medical interpreter may not be able to be seen on that day. If you are unable to come with an interpreter, please call the International Department to discuss an initial consultation with an English-speaking doctor in the Department of General Internal Medicine.
